The year was 1997, and this unprecedented performance took place just before the release of Dee Dee Bridgewater's album Dear Ella. The tribute album to Ella, recorded a year after her death, quickly became the most acclaimed record of all time: it won a Grammy Award for being the best jazz vocal album and for Slide Hampton's rearrangements of Duke Ellington's 'Cotton Tail', which was an instant hit from the very first notes.
