In the 1960s, Ella Fitzgerald was touring a lot. We might fondly remember her fantastic live album Ella In Berlin with its version of Mack The Knife, in particular. For this 1964 concert, she was accompanied by her inseparable trio made up of pianist Tommy Flanagan and Roy Eldridge, a leading trumpet player of the swing period. Being a character lacking neither grit nor spontaneity, the latter is an adequate interlocutor for Ella, who has never hidden her propensity for humorous scat. This is made clear in the dialogue on Perdido, where Roy Eldridge pushes her into completely unbridled territory.
